Founded by two second-generation Dominicanas, NI AQUÍ, NI ALLÁ (NaNa) was initially imagined in 2009 and eventually created in early 2010.

Inspired by the coils of our curly hair, the radiant color of our skin, the trials and tribulations of our immigrant families, the seasonings of our food, the pulsating rhythm of our music and the beauty of this grand earth in which we live in, we created this blog with the hopes of providing a raw and uncensored perspective on life & the overall experience of living between two worlds…neither here, nor there.

Through the publication (and sometimes re-publication) of analytical insights, thought-provoking imagery and personal accounts of our own life journeys, NI AQUÍ, NI ALLÁ aims to promote dialogue and awareness on a range of topics affecting Latinos and other minority groups & communities.

Barring a last-minute stay, Kimberly McCarthy on June 26 will become the 500th Texas killer to be executed since the state re-activated the death penalty in 1976. Texas leads the nation’s 33 death penalty states in executions, killing more than the next five most active states combined.

Virginia, with 110 executions, places second.

Minutes before the killing hour, McCarthy, 52, condemned for the 1997 murder-robbery of a 70-year-old Dallas County woman, will be strapped to a gurney in a room deep within the 164-year-old prison. Then, as a warden and chaplain stand silently nearby, she will be injected with a lethal dose of a drug commonly used to euthanize cats and dogs.

McCarthy, a one-time occupational therapist and home health care worker, will be the fourth woman in Texas executed by injection.

Supported by law since Texas’ earliest days, executions like hers remain at the heart of a raging dispute pitting most Texans against an array of death penalty opponents here and abroad.

kemetically-afrolatino:

Black Contemporary Art

Julien Sinzogan was born in 1957 in Porto-Novo, Republic of Benin. He studied architecture in Paris at the École Spéciale des Travaux Public, and lives and works in France.

Sinzogan’s work expresses the way of life informed and inspired by the Yoruba divinatory and religious system known as Ifa. The Yoruba people of Nigeria and Benin in West Africa see life as taking a cyclical trajectory through which individuals experience the tangible world (aye), depart to the spirit world (orun) and are reborn. Sinzogan’s works explore the journeys between these different but closely related worlds. The voyages between such realms lie at the heart of religious practice across much of the Atlantic world, a world forever shaped by another voyage: the middle passage of the Atlantic slave trade.

Omar Ba is a Senegalese artist who holds a degree from l’Ecole Nationale des Beaux-arts de Dakar, and has been living in Geneva, Switzerland, since 2003, where he completed an MA at the Ecole Superieure des Beaux-Arts.

He has since has participated in four separate exhibitions at the Galerie Anne De Villepoix, as well as the Guy Bartschi gallery, and in 2011 won the prestigious Swiss Art Award.

Omar Ba’s paintings present a colorful, fantastic, at times chaotic world where the order of things as we perceive them in the visible world is turned on its head. Giant plants tower over a miniature human world gripped by globalization; huge mother and father figures become hybrid godlike creatures at once terrifying and seductive because of the sheer beauty of Omar Ba’s craftsmanship and decorative use of saturated color.

ISTANBUL - Turkish riot police fired water cannon and teargas at hundreds of protesters in Istanbul’s Taksim Square on Tuesday, Reuters witnesses said, entering the square for the first time since demonstrations against plans to develop a park there turned violent.

The police move came after Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan agreed to meet protest leaders, whose peaceful demonstrations two weeks ago spiralled into protests against his government in which three people have been killed and about 5,000 hurt.

Police removed protesters’ banners from a building overlooking the square and the local governor said police had no intention of breaking up the protest in adjoining Gezi Park.

“Our aim is to remove the signs and pictures on Ataturk statue and the Ataturk Cultural Centre. We have no other aim,” Istanbul Governor Huseyin Avni Mutlu wrote on Twitter. “Gezi Park and Taksim will not be touched.”

Police hung a single Turkish flag and a picture of modern Turkey’s founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk from the building.

Crowd control vehicles fired water cannon against groups of protesters who threw stones, fireworks and petrol bombs at the police. Nearby, hundreds more protesters, wearing face masks to protect against the effects of teargas, gathered on steps leading from the square to the park.

“Every place is Taksim, every place resistance,” the protesters chanted.
